Living on a prayer
April 24th 2012,
Dad was just taken into OT today midday for tracheotomy procedure as his breathing was not good at all and the tube for breathing put in via his mouth had ran out its course of time and could not be kept in any longer due to the high risk of complications it can cause. He already has a feeding tube aka NG tube as he cannot swallow anything and the aspiration pneumonia is still really bad. His vitals play a harmonic tune 24 hours a day with lows and highs for no rhyme or reason.
Thank GOD the procedure went fine but he is still under observation for next few days to ascertain his stability. There is no new development except for a bed sore on his left hip which I believe was to happen eventually even with the air mattress and scheduled position changes.
If all goes well with this procedures outcome, doctors have suggested that we may take him home as he is cause there is nothing much the hospital/medical science could do for him at this moment and by this the delima starts...... Then what????
Just for info:
The tracheotomy is a surgical procedure where a hole is made in the neck just below the adam's apple. A little plastic or metal tube is placed through that hole and passed directly into the trachea. This tube can then be connected to the respirator machine.
A tracheotomy can be useful in situations where the breathing is compromised due to a malfunction of the breathing mechanism or an obstruction in the upper airway.
